| Computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA) was used to characterize the motility of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax spermatozoa and to study the effect of several physicochemical variables and heavy metals on sperm swimming performance. Duration of sperm motility in sea bass was very short (< 50 s). During the first 20 s all the motility variables measured remained approximately constant, the velocity and linearity of the movement being maximum during this period, while both variables decreased sharply later. While slight variations in pH did not significantly modify sperm swimming performance, changes in osmolality affected all the measured motility variables. | O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi analisar o efeito da radiação vermelha de baixa intensidade sobre alguns parâmetros cinéticos do espermatozoide canino criopreservado. Ejaculados de oito cães adultos foram centrifugados, rediluídos em meio tris-gema de ovo com 6% de glicerol, e, posteriormente, fracionados em: T1: incidência de radiação vermelha (660 NM) (Fisioled - Mmoptics - 100mW) por 60 segundos, antes do resfriamento e após a descongelação; T2: incidência somente antes do resfriamento; T3: incidência somente após a descongelação; e T4: sem incidência. | Sperm characteristics of scallops have not been well described in the scientific literature. The effects of sperm release technique (thermal shock versus serotonin injection), of sperm collection technique (testis sampling versus serotonin injection), of sperm sampling location along the genital tract, of in vitro sperm maturation, and of time post activation on scallop sperm characteristics were assessed in the present work. | The effects of reduced doses of Ovaprim™ (GnRHa + domperidone) on sperm release of Brycon orbignyanus and Prochilodus lineatus were evaluated. Furthermore, sperm quality was compared among fresh, equilibrated and post-thaw samples. Males received a single and reduced dose of Ovaprim™ (0.125 or 0.25 ml/kg); control males received pituitary extract (cPE; 3 mg/kg). | This study evaluates the effects of extender osmolality and composition on the cooling of Prochilodus lineatussperm. Sperm was diluted in six extenders: two compositions (powdered coconut water(tm) = ACP; Beltsville Thawing Solution(tm) = BTS) x three osmolalities (285, 325, and 365 mOsm/kg) plus an undiluted control, and stored at 6-8°C. Motility rate and velocities (curvilinear, straight line, and average path) were determined every other day. Osmolality did not affect the quality of cooled sperm, thus data were pooled. | Parameters used to assess the survival of larvae after cryopreservation generally misestimate the damages that prevent larval development. The objectives of the present study were to 1) define the reliability of the survival rate, assessed at 2 and 7 days post fertilization, to estimate Pacific oyster larval quality after thawing, and 2) select complementary tools allowing an early and reliable estimation of their quality.
